The original plan was to convert the 4th Marine Regiment into a Marine Littoral Regiment, but recent threat assessments led to a change in those plans. The regiment will now be retained as a reinforced Marine Infantry Regiment to respond to potential crises and conflicts.
Lt. Col. Eric Flanagan, a Marine Corps spokesman, said this decision is based on current threat assessments that take into account the growing threat from competitors in the Indo-Pacific. Retaining the 4th Marine Regiment is intended to ensure the Marine Corps is able to respond decisively to regional threats while providing integrated deterrence alongside allies and partners.
