The Californian company Vast Space has set itself the goal of creating the Haven-1, the first independent commercial platform in low Earth orbit (LEO). The space station is scheduled to be launched into space in 2026 using a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Weighing around 14,000 kilograms, Haven-1 will be the largest spacecraft ever launched on this rocket. The station is designed for up to four short-term missions with astronauts, with four people able to stay on board for ten days at a time.
Vast Space, which was only founded in 2021, has developed rapidly and now employs around 800 people. Almost all of the hardware is manufactured in-house; only solar systems and drives are purchased. The Haven-1 space station will not only serve as a private station, but will also open up new avenues in human space travel. The station’s design places great emphasis on comfort and a calming environment, contrasting with the functional International Space Station (ISS).
The development of Haven-1 is a significant step towards a new era of space travel. The station will serve as a test platform for larger projects such as Haven-2, which will be modular and could potentially replace the ISS when it is decommissioned in 2030. Haven-2 will have additional docking capabilities and larger volume and could be launched on SpaceX’s Starship rocket. These developments are part of Vast’s long-term vision to enable life in space.
Funding for Haven-1 is secured, while Haven-2’s design depends on support from NASA’s Commercial LEO Destinations Program. Vast Space plans to take another step toward artificial gravity and long-term space stays with Haven-2. The company’s vision is to create destinations in space where people can live, work and view Earth from a new perspective.
