Venezuelans were concerned this Wednesday about the presence of US warships in the region and the growing tensions between Washington and Caracasconsidering it a threat to sovereignty.
“A few months have passed since the boats were sent and everything indicates that they will be there for a long time. O combating drug trafficking is just an excuse to drive change and constantly provoke the Government, but we are prepared to resist, defend the revolution and national sovereignty”, Luís Ángel Soto told Lusa.
“Over time, these operations can affect our economy and tourism. The fishing sector is already suffering the impact of presence of North American boats. Venezuela has an exclusive maritime economic zone whose activity has reduced, and there are even maritime transport companies for goods and cargo that have suspended activities despite us being an importing and exporting country”, said Soto.
Accountant Miryam Rivillo assured that “no one wants an invasion of the country”because “a war, a conflict, always brings difficult moments and violence. We don’t want that, nor do we want incidents that justify retaliation on one side or the other.”
For Miryam, “it is important for countries to combat drug trafficking, but this is also not something that can be successful overnight.”
“The big question we have is how long these boats will be there and how this will affect us. And also if, after achieving these objectives, [o Presidente norte-americano]Donald Trump will continue to push for us to have a democratic regime, in which freedoms and human rights are respected”, added Rivillo.
