After several postponements, there is still no agreement with either the PS or Chega for the Nationality Law to be approved. If the PS is publicly silent on the matter, Chega puts pressure on the PSD: if there is no concession, it votes against the proposal.
After the meeting of Chega’s national leadership this afternoon, André Ventura informed that negotiations with the PSD should last throughout the night: “A consensus has not yet been reached”, he said. The main point of contention is the fact that the PSD does not including the loss of automatic nationality for terrorism crimes and serious crimes such as murder and rape and having presented the sanctions in an autonomous project: it is “a point of divergence that” Chega “will not abdicate”.
“The PSD has already accepted this on the issue of foreigners. If we can expel people for committing crimes, why can’t we take away their nationality?”, asked the leader of Chega, who responded to Hugo Soares saying that the party does not throw “political tantrums” and that including the loss of nationality for specific cases such as the crime of terrorism is a “value” issue. And, along the way, he accused the PSD of “not honoring the commitment it had with voters” and of approaching the PS out of “fear”.
The last proposed amendment to the diploma that Chega presented placed the loss of nationality as an additional sanction to be decided by a judge, but Ventura clarified that this was a concession to the PSD, not reciprocated by the social democrats when they placed the loss of nationality in an addition to the Penal Code. And, therefore, Chega’s proposal could still be withdrawn until voting time and the party could end up voting against the nationality law and against the addition.
“If there is no understanding in these fundamental values, Chega will not make the nationality law viable. For us it’s the same thing. If these values are not taken into account, Chega will not make it viable. (…) If they want a law to leave things as they are, it’s best not to change it”, said Ventura.
