Spain pays tribute this Wednesday, with a state funeral in Valencia, to the people who died a year ago in floods in the east of the country, a tragedy that continues to be investigated by the courts and three parliamentary committees.
On October 29, 2024, a “cold drop” or DANA, as an “isolated depression at high levels” is known in Spain, formed in the south of the Iberian Peninsula and generated highly intense and concentrated rains, above all, in the interior of the Valencia region, where levels of water fall were measured in 24 hours with values that were the highest since recorded in Europe.
The water, in large quantities, ended up descending towards the Mediterranean coast through ravines and banks and invaded, at the end of the afternoon, roads and streets in several suburbs of the city of Valencia, one of the most densely populated areas in Spain.
229 people died in the floods and storm in the autonomous region of the Valencian Community, seven in a neighboring area of the Castile La Mancha region and one in Andalusia (southern Spain), according to official data.
In Valencia, the region at the epicenter of the tragedy, the storm affected an area of around 553 square kilometers of 75 municipalities and 306 thousand people.
According to the autonomous government, the floods caused damage of at least 17,800 million euros to homes, supply and transport infrastructure, natural parks and protected areas, schools, health centers, social and cultural facilities or 64,100 companies, among other sectors.
The floods in Valencia were also marked by communication problems due to a lack of coordination between authorities, who were slow to issue alerts via SMS and initially refused help from the central government.
The population also criticized the lack of prevention and territorial planning.
