The Department of Home Affairs building in Germiston has been engulfed in flames.
Thick plumes of smoke are visible across the area as emergency services work to extinguish the blaze.
President Street and Jack Street have been closed to traffic, and nearby buildings have been evacuated.
FIREFIGHTERS BATTLE THE BLAZE
The top section of the two-storey building is alight, while firefighters continue efforts to gain access to the lower level.
City of Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services spokesperson, William Ntladi, told eNCA that no casualties have been reported so far.
While the cause of the fire remains under investigation, numerous social media users believe the fire is linked to an ongoing protest in the area.
