In a truly unsavoury incident that has sent ripples through the local rugby community, a player from Manenberg Rangers has been banned for life after punching a referee during a club match in Paarl.
According to reports, the shocking moment saw a referee assaulted during a clash between the Rangers and Albions at Dal Josafat Sports Ground.
The referee was said to be in the process of issuing a red card to Manenberg centre Yaseen Elliot when the player suddenly lashed out, punching him twice with real force.
It has since been confirmed that Elliot has been banned for life, while the referee is apparently recovering well despite being left with a swollen face and a sore jaw.
