WATCH: Shivambu dismisses MK and EFF, ‘they don’t deserve attention’

Leader of the recently formed Afrika Mayibuye Movement, Floyd Shivambu, says his former political homes should not be given attention.

His comments come after the party’s logo was launched and sparked strong reactions on social media.

The flag is red, black, and green, which the party says represents solidarity, liberation, and the shared heritage and destiny of African people.

LOGO SPARKS COMPARISONS TO THE EFF

The logo also features an image of Africa and a hand holding a spear and pen. As a result, many online believe the Afrika Mayibuye Movement’s emblem is a copy of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) symbol.

Despite this, Shivambu said uMkhonto weSizwe (MK Party) and the EFF should not be given attention since they represent a small number of voters.

“We are not going to model our politics on talking about uMkhonto weSizwe or the EFF. We have got an organisation now, Afrika Mayibuye Movement, and that is what we are going to talk about. We are going to talk about the interests and aspirations of the people of South Africa. We are not going to bog down to discussing the personalities,” said Shivambu.

AFRIKA MAYIBUYE MOVEMENT OFFICIALLY LAUNCHED

After a consultation process which began in June, the Afrika Mayibuye Movement was officially launched on Friday, 5 September. Shivambu said South Africans had lost faith in existing political parties and, therefore, Afrika Mayibuye was born.

According to the party, it exists to mobilise change and not act as a cult, nor as an ill-disciplined and corrupt entity. The Afrika Mayibuye Movement says it will champion the interests and aspirations of South Africans.

The party also plans to contest the upcoming local government elections in every single ward and municipality.
