Table Bay harbour police are appealing to the public for witnesses to come forward following violent incidents involving teenagers at the V&A Waterfront and Canal Walk. Social media has been flooded with videos showing clashes that took place over the weekend, drawing widespread attention and concern.
The incident allegedly occurred when two teenage girls began physically fighting at the Canal Walk’s restrooms. The scuffle later continued in a public area, attracting a crowd and sparking further unrest. The incident comes as the June school holidays kicked off on Friday, 27 June.
Western Cape police spokesperson Warrant Officer Joseph Swartbooi said police are aware of the incident.
“Deployments have been bolstered in the area. However, no one has come forward to register criminal cases for further investigation,” said Swartbooi. He urged anyone who witnessed the violence to contact Crime Stop at 08600 10111.
FIGHT NIGHT TREND GROWS
The incidents have brought to light the growing trend of ‘fight night’, which sees teens gathering to participate in scruffles. These gatherings are allegedly for social media clout. Posters of the planned fights have also been emerging online. According to the Voice of the Cape, V&A Waterfront’s Head of PR and Communications, Donald Kau, said security has been beefed up.
He said the trends not only endanger those involved but also bystanders. Kau also added that serious action will be taken against those involved in the fights.
CALLS FOR DISIPLINE GROWS FOLLOWING WATERFRONT INCIDENT
The violent clashes have sparked widespread outrage online, with many social media users calling for those involved in the brawls to be held accountable. Others believe that teenagers should be accompanied by parents or guardians when visiting public spaces. The incidents have also ignited a broader conversation about public safety.
