The autumn weather will be felt this week in the Yucatan Peninsula with the arrival of the first cold fronts of the season, one weak in the middle of the week and another more intense towards Thursday, which will officially mark the arrival of the first “northern” of the year.
This is predicted by Juan Antonio Palma Solís, coordinator of Yucatán Meteorology, in an interview with Yucatan Diary.
According to the specialist, the week will begin with scattered rains between tomorrow and Tuesday, the result of the entry of humidity from both the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea.
“We are going to have intermittent precipitation, with sunny moments and then cloudy, typical of autumn. This behavior will continue while a new frontal system forms in the southern United States,” he explains.
Cold front season
The first cold front, expected to enter the Gulf starting tomorrow night and reach the Peninsula between Tuesday and Wednesday, will be of weak to moderate intensity, although sufficient to leave rain in about 60% of the state, especially on the coast and the central area.
“This first system will not bring strong winds or a ‘northern’ event, but it will generate a slight thermal drop,” details Palma Solís.
“The maximum temperatures will be around 32 to 33 degrees during the day, while the minimum temperatures will drop to between 18 and 22 degrees, especially at night and early in the morning.”
The meteorologist warns that after the passage of this front a second mass of continental polar air, coming from Canada, will advance rapidly through the Gulf of Mexico.
This new front—which would reach the Peninsula between Wednesday night and Thursday morning—will bring with it northerly winds of up to 60 kilometers per hour (kph) on the Yucatecan coast, in addition to waves greater than two meters, conditions that could lead to the temporary closure of ports.
“This will be the first northern event of the season. In Veracruz it could be more intense, with gusts close to 90 kph, but in Yucatán it will be enough to cool the atmosphere and leave significant cloudiness, rain and winds on the coast,” he indicated.
They push “Melissa”
Palma Solís specifies that this second front will also push the tropical storm “Melissa”, which is currently moving away towards Jamaica and Cuba.
“Both fronts – the first weak and the second stronger – will be those that push ‘Melissa’ out of the western Caribbean, without risk for the Peninsula,” he clarified.
With the arrival of the polar air mass associated with the second front, starting on Thursday and especially the weekend of October 31 to November 2, a more noticeable drop in temperatures is expected.
The meteorologist reiterated the call to sailors and fishermen to pay attention to the warnings from the port captains and Civil Protection: “Starting on Thursday, the conditions at sea will be adverse. It is best to plan ahead and avoid risks in the first north of the season.”
Thus, between cloudy skies, intermittent rains and fresh air that announces the arrival of November, Yucatán will experience the beginning of winter weather this week, with the promise of colder nights and perfect mornings for coffee.— DARINKA RUIZ MORIMOTO

Values
“The minimum temperatures could be between 10 and 15 degrees in the south and center of the state, and between 13 and 15 degrees in Mérida, particularly in the early mornings,” explains the expert.
Environmental factors
“Rural and vegetated areas will feel the cold more, while in the capital the asphalt and the urban environment mitigate the decline a little.”
temperate environment
The maximum values will be mild, around 30 degrees, creating a “pleasant environment for end-of-month activities and the days of the faithful dead,” he points out.
Cyclones
The specialist recalled that although these cold fronts bring drier and cooler air, the tropical cyclone season has not ended: “It officially ends on November 30. There may still be activity in the Caribbean, with tropical waves that interact with the frontal systems. Therefore, it is important not to let our guard down.”
