The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a Level 4 warning for severe thunderstorms over the north-western parts of KwaZulu-Natal on Monday, with heavy downpours, hail, and damaging winds expected.
According to SAWS, the stormy conditions are linked to a cut-off low pressure system over the country’s central interior, coupled with a high pressure system to the east.
This weather pattern is set to generate isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms across KwaZulu-Natal, with severe activity anticipated in the western regions of the province.
Potential Impacts Include:
- Flooding of roads, bridges, and both formal and informal settlements
- Hail damage to infrastructure
- Life-threatening flash flooding in fast-flowing streams and rivers
- Severe travel disruptions, including blocked routes and accidents
- Structural damage or loss of infrastructure
SAWS has advised residents to exercise extreme caution, recommending the following safety measures:
- Stay indoors and avoid travel where possible
- Do not cross flooded roads, rivers or streams where water is above ankle-deep
- Move valuables to higher levels in buildings at risk of flooding
- Avoid sheltering under trees, and steer clear of metal objects during lightning activity
- Refrain from fishing or playing golf, as rods and clubs can attract lightning
The weather service warns that quick action can save lives and has urged communities to monitor official weather updates closely throughout the storm period.
