Weight Loss While Keeping Late-Night Snacks? Bodybuilder’s Modified Fasting Plan Revealed

Among the toughest parts of eating healthy, dieting or simply attempting to cut back on the “bad” foods in life, is the late-night urges that seemingly always come. Going to bed hungry is never easy or fun, but most diets and the data that support them highlight the benefits of not eating too close to bedtime. However, well-known natural bodybuilder and fitness content creator Will Tennyson decided to create a unique form of fasting that blends with a weight-loss approach tailor-made for late-night snackers.

During a conversation with Chris Williamson, host of the Modern Wisdom podcast, Tennyson was asked about his best strategies for fat loss and calorie restriction. The response was incredibly interesting, highlighting what’s dubbed as “macro fasting.”

Tennyson explained his approach to fat loss by highlighting another aspect that goes along with what most experts say: you have to find what best fits your life and psychology. Dieting, weight loss and fasting can be challenging enough on their own, but they become even tougher if forcing yourself to do it in a way that’s not sustainable.

Everyone is different in what works for them, and Tennyson is proof of that, as he begins his day by loading up on protein early, positioning himself to be content through the afternoon.

“I’ve kind of coined this thing called macro fasting, where you don’t necessarily have to like not eat at all, but fast the carbs and the fat for later into the day,” Tennyson explains. “So a lot of times when I’m hungry, I’ll just make egg whites or I’ll have a protein shake, I’ll have some Greek yogurt, and that keeps you full.”

“Not a lot of calories, so I kind of just cruise on that stuff throughout the day. And then once it hits nighttime…it’s like holy s—, I got 250g carbs, [and] like 75g fat. I’m going to have some fun food, but I’m going to make some good choices too.”

While it’s far from a common approach to calorie restriction, the idea of “macro fasting” could be beneficial for people who don’t feel overly hungry in the early-to-mid afternoon.

Tennyson’s modified fasting and fat loss approach:

  • Focuses on protein in the morning
  • Includes fasting the carbs and fat until later in the day
  • Breakfast includes the likes of egg whites, protein shake and Greek yogurt
  • Allows him to enjoy “fun food” at night, such as eating snacks

Tennyson’s custom plan is tailored to his lifestyle, and, obviously, everyone is different, but the weight-loss structure here still allows him to eat the foods he enjoys. As he told Williamson, sometimes this can even include an additional snack at night.

“I noticed when I watch TV and I have a snack, and I’m like ‘I kinda want another one,’ and I can. It helps me mentally, and then, you know, I go to bed and I feel fine, and then the next day I wake up, I have my coffee, stay caffeinated,” Tennyson explains.

Whether this weight-loss plan is up your alley or not, finding the path that works best for you is going to give you the best chance of success and ultimately help you reach your goals. Utilizing trial-and-error can never hurt, so why not find your own version of “macro fasting,” or whatever other custom approach is right for you?
