Westside High School football team gives back to community

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – Westside High School is serving the community on their by-weeks.

At Masters Table Soup Kitchen, Head Football Coach, Cedric Mason and Offensive Line Coach Marqus Jackon say they want to show their players the power of giving back to the community.

This is Cedric Mason’s first year as head coach at Westside and says the tools they use in football go beyond the game.

Mason tells me it means a lot to the people at Westside that these football players are taking time out of their long weekend to help those in need.

“We don’t want to just build football players, we want to have great men that grow up to be great fathers, great leaders, those that are a great part of their community. During football we ask for fundraisers, we ask for sponsors, and those people come out and they work hard. We want to be able to give back to those people and show them we are not just asking for donations but we’re willing to give back to the community as well,” said Cedric Mason, Head Football Coach for Westside High School.

Offensive Line and Character Coach at Westside High School says they look forward to helping our community and hopes this act of kindness inspires people to volunteer at one of the many organizations in our area.

“We definitely want to take our time to put more time into investing in our community. Especially with the younger generation there’s a lot of negative stereotypes in and around the younger crowd and we want to shoe people that we have a great set of guys here at Westside and hopefully it inspires other teams and other people in general to volunteer their time,” Jackson said.

One of the leaders for the football team says he wants people to recognize Westside not only for how they play but for their help in the community.

“Us just being great to the community. Westside is not just a football team, basketball team, just for sports, Westside can be remembered so much as volunteering, helping the community, helping when needed, not even when the cameras are around, just helping in general,” said Reonte Brown, Senior and Leader of Westside High School Football Team.

They will next be partnering with Habitat for Humanity on September 27.
