Afghanistan and Pakistan reached a ceasefire agreement after bloody confrontations that lasted for days and left dozens dead and wounded, at the conclusion of negotiations hosted by Doha with Qatari-Turkish mediation.
The Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the two sides agreed to an immediate ceasefire and the establishment of mechanisms to consolidate peace, with follow-up meetings to be held to ensure sustainable implementation.
In this context, experts and analysts on the “Beyond the News” program wondered whether the agreement was capable of addressing the historical roots of the conflict dating back to the British colonial era, or whether it was a temporary truce in light of the presence of non-state “armed actors” and deep border and political disputes.
At the official level, the defense ministers of the two countries affirmed their commitment to the agreement and work to stop terrorism, praising the Qatari-Turkish role as a guarantee of stability.
From the analytical side, the writer and political analyst Mohibullah Al-Sharif pointed out that reaching the agreement was expected because the two countries were not prepared to bear the pressures of escalation.
In turn, the academic and researcher in international relations, Dr. Sami Reda, considered that the good offices of Qatar and Turkey helped bring the two positions closer together, pointing out the presence of armed non-state actors in the border region who complicate the scene.
