The voices of former directors, cited in the book, reveal an environment of internal manipulation, clandestine recordings, power struggles and a lack of financial transparency. Carvalho analyzes the electoral growth of Chega, which has become the second Portuguese political force in just six years. He explains that the party captures a popular electorate, mostly coming from the PCP and PSD, disillusioned with the system and attracted by a simple and emotional protest speech. He compares the phenomenon to the populist transformation of other European countries, highlighting that Ventura adapts to the “air of the times” and dominates media and digital dynamics with great effectiveness.

Miguel Carvalho also highlights the role of social networks, sensationalist media and radical religious movements in consolidating the party. It denounces the lack of screening of candidates, the entry of figures with criminal records and Chega’s permeability to extremist groups. For Carvalho, the party lives in a bubble of misinformation and paranoia, fed by a centralized and authoritarian structure. Finally, Miguel Carvalho reflects on the role of journalism in democratic surveillance. He admits to having felt pressure during the investigation, but argues that the reporter’s mission is to resist fear and expose the contradictions of power.
