Five days after the 25th of April, Francisco Pinto Balsemão gave his first interview to RTP, as director of Expresso, because the PPD had not yet been created. He talks about the challenges of journalism, of “freedom with responsibility” and says that the country “has to fight to achieve this democracy. Will it be able to do so?”, he asks. We debate here the political and journalistic legacy of the PSD’s number one activist and founder of Impresa, who died last week at the age of 88. The former prime minister, who contributed decisively to the consolidation of democracy with the constitutional review of 1982, defended understandings at the center and moderation in general. What happened in the meantime, for the leader of the second largest party to think it is an electoral asset to go on television and say that it takes “three Salazars to put the country in order”, as André Ventura did this week on SIC? Balsemão had already advised the PSD to do “Enough!”. Did he do it?
