What matters in mobility is at Mobi Summit

The state of the art of mobility technologies and public policies for more sustainable cities will take the stage at the major Portugal Mobi Summit conference, this Wednesday and Thursday, in the IPMA auditorium, on Passeio Marítimo de Algés. On the Government side, the Secretaries of State for Energy, Jean Barroca, and Infrastructure, Hugo Espírito Santo, will also be present, as well as mayors such as Isaltino de Morais (Oeiras), Inês de Medeiros (Almada) Ribau Esteves (Aveiro) or Nuno Piteira Lopes (Cascais).

For two days, international experts, government officials, mayors, leaders of transport authorities, researchers and businesspeople will cross paths on what is best done in mobility at a national and global level and project the future.

It is a race against time, taking into account that we are not, globally, sufficiently reducing greenhouse gas emissions at a rate that allows us to reach the end of the century without exceeding 1.5 degrees of global warming. That is why a new, more ambitious review of the targets for lowering emissions is being called for.

Among the major themes that will animate the panels of this 8th edition of the Mobi Summit are the challenges of urban public transport and the discussion about crossing the Tagus, the role of algorithms in transforming mobility, the BRT, the case study of Curitiba, the examples of success in micromobility _ from Barcelona and Madrid to Paris _, renewable fuels or the era of autonomous vehicles, among many others.

To ensure the timely success of the energy transition, a transport revolution is necessary, which is still somewhat silent, but is happening. The expansion of BRT or metrobus projects from north to south of the country is an example of this.

It is a new era for public transport that combines cleaner sources, whether electric batteries or hydrogen, with greater frequency and reliability for users, guarantee its promoters.

The edition of the Portugal Mobi Summit 2025 takes place in a year in which Portugal has become a success story in terms of renewable energy performance and will review its targets, bringing them forward by four years, because it managed to ensure that in 2024 renewable energy accounts for more than 70% of its energy package.

But, despite the sharp reduction in the price of social passes in the metropolitan areas of Lisbon and Porto, the use of public transport is still less than desirable, below the pre-pandemic level, and the individual car is still king. The price is that emissions continue to be a serious problem.
