Mexico City, November 29 (However).- Morelia, the capital of Michoacán, is a destination that every traveler should know. This colonial city is full of unmissable spots where history, culture, tradition and flavor are the protagonists.

These are some of those places that you should know if you are visiting this earth:

Historic Center of Morelia

The beautiful Historical Center of Moreliawhere you can see more than 200 historic buildings that combine baroque, neoclassical and plateresque styles; and 15 plazas, mostly built with striking pink quarry typical of the region. For this reason, it has been considered a World Heritage Site by UNESCO since 1991.

Temple Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe

The Temple Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe, a majestic gold-laminated construction that is an emblematic symbol of devotion and was built between 1708 and 1716. Its impressive interior decoration was carried out by the talented indigenous craftsman Juan Orta in 1915. By 1967, the sanctuary became part of the Michoacana University of San Nicolás de Hidalgo (UMSNH).

The Fountain of the Tarascas

The third recommended point is the Fuente de las Tarascas, one of the most representative monuments of the city due to the figures of three Purépecha women holding a basket (batea) full of the fruits of the region. This Michoacan symbol is connected with others that are equally important, the Aqueduct and the Calzada de Fray Antonio de San Miguel.

The road is an ideal spot for a quiet walk, a family walk or simply to enjoy the daily life of this city. For its part, the beautiful Aqueduct located at the intersection of Francisco I. Madero Oriente Avenue and the Morelia-Toluca Highway, was built between the years 1728 to 1730, after demolishing the first one built in the 16th century due to problems in its design. It is considered one of the most beautiful aqueducts in the country and at its peak it was seven kilometers long, but currently only 253 arches that span 1,700 meters are preserved.

Architectural jewels

If it comes to architectural attractions, Morelia has more treasures and the Cathedral is the jewel in the crown. Built between 1660 and 1744, its pink stonework with paneled baroque style stands out on the outside, while its interior is dominated by Doric style ornamentation with neoclassical reliefs. In addition, it houses the eighth largest organ in the world: Saint Gregory the Great.

Also on this list are the Temple of Santa Rosa de Lima, the Las Rosas Conservatory and the Clavijero Cultural Center, a former Jesuit school with a magnificent octagonal dome that is a true architectural gem. On this same site, the Rubén Romero Theater, La Tesorería and the Library of the Universidad Michoacana are located.

Continuing with this tour through the heart of Morelia, lovers will find their favorite place in the Callejón del Romance, a treasure of this heritage city. This road named in honor of the famous poem “Romance of my city” by Morelian artist Lucas Ortiz, invites all passersby to stroll while enjoying fragments of this beautiful work written on the walls.

From architecture we move on to more sugary themes, with the unique candy store on Calle Real and the Candy Museum. The first is a proudly Morelian company with more than 180 years keeping the sweet tradition alive, offering delicacies such as ates, eggnogs, marzipan, table chocolate, morelianas, key chains, sauces, wafers, pancakes, jams, among many other items.

There is also a toy store with artisanal pieces from the region, with super affordable prices ranging from 50 to 200 pesos; as well as a restaurant and a cafeteria called “El Patio de Atrás”, where they serve homemade chocolate and exquisite coffee accompanied by colorful desserts. Meanwhile, in the museum, visitors are explained step by step about the process of making the sweet in convents and monasteries during the Colony and in the mansions of Morelian families. They also tell in detail the marketing of the product and the birth of the first factories, all this through 5 rooms.

Since we’re talking about food, we must add another gastronomic delight to this top of recommendations. This is Morelian gazpacho, a traditional dessert that is prepared with mango, jicama and pineapple in small pieces, as well as orange and lemon juice, Cotija cheese, onion, salt and black chili powder. Some people also accompany it with cucumber, watermelon, onion, cilantro, chamoy or tagine. Gazpacho is perfect at any time of the year, but even more so when it’s hot. It is very easy to find it in the stalls that abound in the capital of Michoacán.
