The Currie Cup will always hold a special place in the hearts of many South African rugby players and fans, and although the status of the tournament has changed dramatically in recent times, there will always be plenty of value attached to it.
It’s now more of a feeder tournament, providing the opportunity for many young players to gain some of their first experiences of senior rugby, and this weekend the Lions and Griquas will go head-to-head in this season’s domestic final.
The Lions will host the Currie Cup Premier Division final for the second successive season when Griquas travel to Johannesburg after the two teams managed to progress to the decider by comfortably winning their semi-finals matches.
Currie Cup final will kick off at 15:00
The Lions, fielding a team stacked with URC players, will undoubtedly be firm favourites in the title decider, and come off a resounding semi-final victory when they romped to a 67-19 triumph over the Boland Kavaliers at Ellis Park.
In the second semi-final, at Suzuki Stadium in Kimberley, Griquas defeated the Cheetahs 24-5 to secure their place in Saturday’s final.
Lions to call on Springbok powerhouse
Interestingly, Asenathi Ntlabakanye is set to start for the Lions as he waits to present his case after an “adverse analytical finding” was found during random testing by the South African Institute for Drug Free Sport (SAIDS).
The powerful prop is still free to play as he waits to present his defence, and the Lions will make use of this significant player boost this weekend.
