Black Friday 2025 will take place on Friday, 28 November, the day after Thanksgiving in the United States. It’s the day when retailers slash prices on big-ticket items and everyday essentials, and when shoppers around the world hunt for the year’s biggest savings.
In South Africa, Black Friday has become a major shopping event, with thousands of deals both online and in stores.
Over the past decade, it’s expanded beyond a single day to an entire shopping season that often stretches through most of November. And some South African retailers have already dropped early Black Friday specials.
Black Friday comes early
This year, Massmart, the retail group behind Game and Makro, isn’t waiting for the end of November. The company has announced that its first wave of Black Friday deals will drop on Friday, 24 October 2025, officially kicking off a month-long sale.
According to Mybroadband, Massmart revealed that new deals will also roll out every week in November, giving shoppers multiple chances to score bargains without rushing.
The first big tech deals
The retail group already revealed several standout tech and appliance deals which will be available from 24 October. These include:
- The Samsung 58-inch Ultra HD Smart TV for R5 999 (saving R4 000)
- The Lenovo Intel Core i5 Laptop for R7 999 (saving R3 000)
- As well as the Hisense 7kg Front Loader Washing Machine for R4 499 (saving R2 500)
How to make the most of Black Friday 2025
If you are planning to shop till you drop this Black Friday, here are some tips to make the best of it:
- Start early: With some deals already launching this week, early birds sometimes get the best stock and discounts.
- Plan purchases: Identify the big-ticket items you actually need, like TVs, laptops, or appliances, to avoid impulse buys.
- Compare prices: Use online tools or store apps to verify that the “discount” is real.
- Sign up for newsletters: Retailers often send early access codes or preview catalogues to subscribers.
- Watch for restocks: Many deals return later in November, so patience can also sometimes pay off.
