One of the most awe-inspiring sites to see in the Cape is a whale or dolphin making its way through the ocean waters.
This time of year is ideal for whalewatching because it’s whale season. It runs from June to around November, when Southern Right and Humpback whales make their annual rounds along the Cape’s coast.
Apart from Hermanus, which is considered one of the best places, there are several other locations you can visit to spot a splash, so let’s dive in.
Where to find whales in the Cape
Hermanus offers various viewing points:
- Gearings Point
- Siever’s Point
- The Old Harbour, which features viewing terraces.
- Kwaaiwater lookout
- Beaches like Voëlklip and Grotto.
- The Cliff Path
- Dreunkrans
Other recommended places include Cape Agulhas, False Bay, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, and Muizenberg, among others. The Whale Trail is a 55-kilometre route that runs through the De Hoop Nature Reserve, starting from Potberg and ending at Koppie Alleen, which reportedly offers some spectacular views.
The Whale Festival
Be sure to check out The Whale Festival in Hermanus in October this year. It’s a family event which will offer a variety of activities, entertainment, a deep dive into conservation, and of course, spotting a few majestic tails making waves in the water!
