Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management has announced a new program designed to provide students with hands-on experience in startup investing. The Orange Business Angel Network (OBAN) will launch in spring 2026 and will give selected students the opportunity to conduct professional evaluations of startups, organize pitch events and forge connections with entrepreneurs and angel investors.
Participating students receive three academic credits and are introduced to the fundamentals of angel investing. You will conduct market analysis, analyze financial data and organize pitch sessions led by Professor Dr. Jeffrey Gish will be directed. The program is part of the Whitman School’s Transformation 2030 initiative, which aims to become a top 25 business school.
OBAN will focus on companies that are worth less than $10 million and have raised less than $2 million in capital but have the potential to become attractive investments. Students will work closely with experienced investors and dedicated Syracuse University alumni to gain valuable insight and confidence in highly competitive areas such as venture capital, finance and consulting.
A unique feature of OBAN is that the program angels can make their investment decisions independently and negotiate directly with the groups. This allows for a direct and practical learning experience for the students, who also conduct the research and analysis used by the angels to make investment decisions.
The Whitman School is currently accepting applications for the three groups that will participate in the program. Students must have completed core entrepreneurial courses before applying. Prospective investors with ties to Syracuse University can apply now to become founding members, while other entrepreneurs can be considered starting Jan. 12.
