The gravelly voice? The trademark ability to melt into the shadows and strike at the opportune time? The patented aura of danger and mystique? Yup. Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough) is back, and exactly how you remember him.

‘A familiar face is returning to the village full-time! None other than Graham Foster will make a sensational comeback,’ enthused Emmerdale producer Laura Shaw, after she presumed-dead Graham shocked the world by turning up, very much alive, in Corriedale.

Following his fleeting appearance in yesterdays episode, Graham makes his proper comeback tonight (or today, if you’re streaming on ITVX), reuniting with his former flame, Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), as the mystery surrounding the murder of evil trafficker Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) rages on.

When Kim Tate (Claire King) went to prison around 2012, she tasked Graham with looking after son Jamie Tate (Alexander Lincoln). At the time, Graham was struggling with an alcohol addiction and got Andrea (Anna Nightingale), a barmaid, to get close to Jamie as an alternative.

Andrea and Graham had a relationship that lasted around 6 months, but it ended when Andrea stopped reporting back to Graham about Jamie’s movements. She then fell in love with Jamie, and they had a child together called Millie.

In 2017, Graham met Charity (Emma Atkins) and Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb) at a hotel in a bid to keep their luxury car hire firm afloat.

A year later, Graham began drinking heavily on the anniversary of his wife’s death, leading to a fight between him and Joe Tate (Ned Porteous). Graham apologised for his actions, and Joe eventually forgave him. After Joe got into trouble with a man called Connor, Graham sorted him out for Joe.

A couple of months later, Graham was told by Kim to get rid of Joe. He had no choice, and told Joe to leave the village after giving him £100,000.

Graham was then confronted by Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), who was furious with Joe after breaking Debbie’s heart. Cain found Joe and confronted him, leading to Joe falling and hitting his head on a rock. Graham proceeded to let Cain believe that he killed Joe.

In 2019, when Kim was re-released from prison, she discovered CCTV images of Joe that confirmed he’s alive.

Between this and his death in January 2020, Graham began a relationship with Rhona, and also took a DNA test to see if he was the father of Andrea’s daughter Millie.

Who killed Graham in Emmerdale?

The whodunnit storyline that launched after Graham’s murder listed Kim, Charity, Andrea, Al Chapman (Michael Wildman), Jai Sharma (Chris Bisson), and Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock) while the likes of Rhona, Joe, Pierce Harris (Jonathan Wrather) and Ryan Stocks (James Moore) were all alternative suspects.

The plot highlighted different perspectives, noting the reasons why each character could possibly want Graham dead.

It was eventually revealed that Pierce, the man who raped Rhona, was the person who ‘murdered’ Graham. He hit him over the head, and then fought Graham in the woods.

Pierce then hit Graham with his car, leading to him falling off a cliff. Surprisingly, he survived this, but Pierce delivered one final blow to the head, and covered Graham’s body in leaves after.

Why was Graham in Corriedale?

Amid the multi-vehicle pile up in Corriedale, Graham Foster was seen driving a van with an unknown figure in the back.

The person, who we later discovered to be Coronation Street’s own Shona Platt’s (Julia Goulding) sister, Jodie Ramsay (Olivia Frances-Brown), who then escaped and made a run for it.

Graham told someone on the phone that they now have a problem, before abandoning the job upon spotting Joe in the hospital he’d tracked Jodie to.

Graham’s first stop? Rhona. Is there hope that their flame could be rekindled? ‘Who knows? Obviously she would have to forgive him first,’ mused Andrew.

‘Plus her relationship with Marlon is very strong. But Graham did love her. He has been away, and probably has lived quite a lonely life, because he’d have had to go from country to country doing his various jobs that he does freelance. So I would imagine he probably still hankers after her and probably is still in love with her. Watch the space.’

On the subject of his return, Andrew admitted he was as surprised as the fans, but always had a sneaking suspicion his alter-ego could come back! ‘I never expected it at all. Although saying that I did think that Graham always had a possibility of coming back.

Joe confronts Graham in Home Farm in Emmerdale
Graham has always maintained a foot in a dark underworld (Picture: Mark Bruce/ITV)

‘He was a highly trained SAS operative. And the way I had always played it, was that he had worked for the government. So he was into espionage and a type of ‘fixer’ for the government. So used to smoke and mirrors.

‘Graham has been highly trained to do certain things like to hold one’s breath when diving, to remain motionless when being trained as a sniper, etc etc. So there are the skills there. Plus he is very highly connected with some of the “institutions” like the government, high ranking police. So I always presumed that if anybody could come back from the dead – he could.

‘And don’t forget Graham did actually arrange the false death of Joe. Proving he’s in the art of smoke and mirrors, He is in that dark, murky world. Or certainly has been.’
