WHY November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants still insufficient – Bundlezy

WHY November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants still insufficient

November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants will be disbursed on Thursday 6 November 2025. However, the amount in question – R560 per child – is nowhere near sufficient to sustain a growing child’s nutritional needs, say advocacy groups. In fact, according to the Pietermaritzburg Economic Justice and Dignity Group (PEJDG), the amount is only roughly half what a healthy child needs.

Moreover, most core SASSA grants enjoyed increases this month (October 2025), while Child Support did not. The reason for this is because November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants will be paid to roughly 13-million needy parents. This makes it the most expensive social welfare paid in all of South Africa …

Nevertheless, the group says more needs to be done to bring South African Social Security Agency childcare up to snuff. Specifically, PEJDG says meeting a growing child’s nutritional needs costs R1 085 a month (age dependent). This is a far cry from the current R560 paid, especially when you remember the current food poverty line in South Africa is R796 per person per month.

November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants are only paid to one parent (not both). And parents must prove to the agency that their means are less than R67 200 annually, or R5 600 monthly if single. Or R134 300 annually or R11 191 monthly if married. These numbers were quietly increased this year to reduce the amount of successful applicants and keep budgets in check.

MALNUTRITION AND CHILD HUNGER

Furthermore, PEJDG says child hunger and malnutrition is a growing issue in South Africa. It estimates that food insecurity affects as many as 60% of households in the country. Combine that with the fact that more than 45% of South African households receive some form of the SASSA grant, and you can see the true extent of the dilemma.

Therefore, nearly a quarter of children in South Africa are being stunted due to malnutrition. The parliamentary portfolio committee even heard that nearly 1 500 children under the age of five die from acute malnutrition each year. As such, a National Department of Social Development report recommended increasing November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants to R945 to halve child malnutrition.

LAST CALL FOR NOVEMBER 2025 SASSA CHILD SUPPORT GRANTS

SASSA leadership has been beset with irregular hirings, suspensions and firings in 2025. This doesn’t bode well for budget increases in the future. Image: File

Of course, nearly doubling the grant would be impossible. SASSA’s budget decreases in 2026, by R14 billion, to just R271 billion. And the agency either needs to lower grants or reduce the number of beneficiaries accordingly. A reminder that any parent with a child under the age of 18 who qualifies for November 2025 SASSA Child Support Grants is entitled to apply. All you will need is:

  • Valid identity documents (IDs) of you, your child and spouse (if married).
  • Proof of marital status (marriage, birth or death certificate of your spouse).
  • Official birth certificate and ID of the child you’re applying for.
  • Proof of income (both you and your spouse).
  • Certified three-month bank statement (no more than three-months old).
  • Proof of address (a utility statement with your name on it that’s not more the three-months old).
