Password security is an issue that is critically important in the digital world. A recent analysis of over 19 billion leaked passwords shows that many users continue to use simple and easy-to-guess passwords. The most commonly used password worldwide is still ‘123456’, which can be cracked in less than a second. Such passwords are a target for hackers, who use so-called ‘dictionary attacks’ to automatically try out the most common passwords.
Another problem is password reuse. Many users use the same password for different online accounts, which poses a significant security risk. If a single service is compromised, hackers can immediately take over additional accounts using the stolen credentials. This shows the importance of using a unique password for each account.
The quality of a password depends largely on its length and complexity. Experts recommend using passwords with at least 20 characters, consisting of uppercase and lowercase letters, numbers and special characters. Such passwords are much more resistant to brute force attacks. A good alternative are passphrases that consist of several words and are supplemented by numbers and special characters.
Two-factor authentication (2FA) is particularly effective protection against unauthorized access. In addition to the password, a second factor is required, for example a code that is generated via SMS or authenticator app. Even if a password is stolen, the account remains protected with the additional level of security. Nevertheless, 2FA is ignored by many users, even though it usually only takes a few minutes to set up and significantly reduces the risk.
