Australia were dealt a major setback ahead of the third Ashes Test against England, with Steve Smith ruled out through injury.
Smith captained Australia in the absence of Pat Cummins for the first two contests as the hosts took a 2-0 lead in the five-match series.
But the 36-year-old batter, ranked three in the world, is understood to have suffered concussion after a blow in training, meaning Usman Khawaja comes back into the side having initially been left out.
A dejected-looking Smith was pictured crossing the outfield from the dressing room just moments before play at the Adelaide Oval and speculation over his potential absence was soon confirmed.
