Winter Weather Warning Issued as 20 Inches of Snow, 80 mph Winds Approach

Just when you thought the snow and wind was over, on Tuesday, December 16, the National Weather Service (NWS) announced additional winter weather warnings for the U.S.

At least two states are in for more hazardous weather later this week, the NWS reported, as heavy snow and forceful winds continue to plow the region.

“A winter storm blanketed the Northeast on Sunday, bringing the first measurable snowfall of the season for New York City,” a report from the Weather Channel said earlier this week. “Thousands lost power in New Jersey, and flights were delayed at the area’s major airports as some spots saw nearly 3 inches of snow.”

Heavy Snow and Dangerous Winds Expected in Parts of the U.S.

Alaska and Washington are both expected to get an intense round of snowfall and heavy winds later this week.

“The High Wind Watch has been upgraded to a High Wind Warning for the Pacific Side of the Alaska Peninsula,” the NWS in Anchorage, Alaska warned in a post on Tuesday on X. “Wind gusts up to 80 mph are expected. High winds could move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages.”

“A High Wind Watch has been issued for the Eastern Aleutians and portions of the Alaska Peninsula from 12 p.m. Tuesday to 6 a.m. Wednesday. A high wind watch means there is potential for a hazardous high wind event. Monitor the latest forecasts and warnings for updates on this situation. Fasten loose objects or shelter objects in a safe location prior to the onset of winds,” the NWS added.

Areas of Alaska and Washington are also expected to get anywhere from a few inches of additional snowfall to 20 inches, according to a report from the NWS.

Other Areas of the U.S. in for a Weather Change

While Alaska, Washington and certain parts of the Northeast are being warned about hazardous snow and cold, the rest of the U.S. is expected to experience a strong warmup through Christmas.

According to research from the NWS’ Climate Prediction Center, the warming trend is expected to continue throughout the U.S. through the end of the month. A map from the Climate Prediction Center issued on Tuesday, December 16, shows the weather forecast through the end of December shows 90% of the country in for above normal temperatures.

“Areas in the Northern Plains that saw temperatures below zero this past weekend will now see highs soar into the 40s Tuesday and Wednesday. The warmth shifts east Wednesday through Friday as the next cold front moves into the Northern Tier, while the Southwest stays very warm,” the Weather Channel added in a separate report.
