The woman suspected of having abandoned her newborn son at the Sapadores de Leiria fire station in the early hours of Monday was identified and charged. The information was provided by the Public Security Police (PSP).
A newborn was left overnight with the Firefighters Sapadores de Leiria, who transported him to the hospital in Leiria, confirmed the fire commander. The incident occurred at 3:57 am, when the baby was found at the entrance to the fire department building, inside a shopping bag, the source said.
The baby, a boy, was then taken to Leiria hospital to be evaluated and the case was handed over to the authorities. The information had initially been released by CNN Portugal, which added that the shopping bag, in addition to the baby, contained diapers and milk.
Video surveillance images were saved from outside the barracks, which could help identify who abandoned the newborn. An official source from the Local Health Unit (ULS) of the Leiria Region declared this Monday morning that the baby is well and will be one day old. “The child is fine. He arrived safely [ao hospital]snuggled, was covered with a blanket”, said this source, noting that the newborn, in a first observation, “will eventually have a day to live”.
The ULS said that the baby, “still with an umbilical cord”, in addition to “clothes and blanket”, had “a thermal bag, bottle and milk”. According to ULS, which is part of the Hospital de Santo André, in Leiria, “the child will be under observation in the Pediatrics Service, for clinical monitoring”, and it is up to “the competent authorities to carry out their investigation work”.
The commander of the Firefighters Sapadores de Leiria, José Rito, later revealed that the baby was left by a woman at the entrance of the barracks, next to the communications center. An official source from the Leiria District Command also clarified that the PSP was informed of the situation at 5:30 am through the firefighters and that the issue was an alleged crime of exposure or abandonment.
