A 27-year-old Algerian woman, an immigrant in France, was sentenced this Friday (October 24) to a life sentence. She is the first woman to be sentenced with this sentence in the country.
Concerned is the murder and aggravated rape of a 12-year-old girlLola Daviet. For the crime, the group of judges and jurors decided to apply the most severe penalty provided for in the French legal framework.
The case that occurred in 2022 launched a discussion about immigration in the country, since Dahbia Benkired entered the country six years earlier, legally, on a student visa. Without any criminal record, the perpetrator was known to the police as a victim of domestic violence. The immigrant should have left the country in 2022.
After his disappearance was reported, Lola Daviet was found dead inside a suitcase, 200 meters from her parents’ home in Paris. Heard by the police, the now convicted woman explained that she took the teenager to her sister’s apartment, where she forced her to take a shower, and then committed “damage of a sexual nature and other violent acts” on her.
Examined during the trial, Dahbia Benkired was not found to have any problems, being considered mentally healthy, but revealing traces of psychopathy.. The convicted woman’s sister said that the crime was committed for racial reasons.
Even though they are provided for by law, life sentences are rare in France. Two convicted under this measure are, for example, the serial killer Michel Fourniret (now dead), or the jihadist Salah Abdeslam, one of the ringleaders of the November 2015 terrorist attacks in Paris.
