World Figure Skating Champion at 17

Portuguese athlete Madalena Costa, 17 years old, became the senior world figure skating freestyle champion this Wednesday, October 22, in Beijing, China.

The skater became the first Portuguese woman to win the senior world title in the discipline, while still in her first year as a junior. This year she had already become four-time European champion.

“I feel very happy. Very satisfied with my ability to be in the same category as older athletes and to be able to do what I set out to do”said Madalena Costa, cited by Lusa.

Madalena Costa became the youngest person ever globally to win the world title, having also achieved the highest score ever in all levels of women’s world figure skating (260.15).

“I feel very fulfilled with the work that was done with my technical team and with even more motivation to achieve new titles and continue to make history in the sport”he added.

The young skater was ahead of the Italian Cioia Fiori (224.76), silver, and the Spanish Sira Bella Gallardo (185.66), bronze, with compatriots Catarina Craveiro and Mariana Almeida finishing seventh (151.78) and eighth (142.91), respectively, in the total of the short and long program events.

“This title represents all the things I gave up and all the hours I spent training while my friends had fun. All those days I didn’t feel like training, but with the help of my mother, who is my coach, I managed to overcome those obstacles”he stressed.

“It represents the little Madalena who had very big dreams, but probably not as big as competing in the world championship at the age of 17 and coming out with the gold medal”he continued.
