This Saturday, “in a great demonstration of Benfiquismo” praised by the six candidates for the club’s presidency – Rui Costa, Luís Filipe Vieira, João Noronha Lopes, João Diogo Manteigas, Martim Mayer and Cristóvão Carvalho – the members of the Luz emblem are preparing to break the world record for in-person voting at a club. In the 2021 ballot, Rui Costa was elected president of Benfica, with 84.48% of the votes, against 12.24% for Francisco Benítez, in the most popular election in the club’s 121 years, with 40,085 voters.
In addition to having already surpassed the highest electoral registration, the Benfica fans entered the world podium, surpassing the 43,637 of Boca Juniors, from Argentina. The next brands are from Barcelona, a club that in 2021 took 56,300 members to the polls. A mark only surpassed by themselves in 2010, with 57,088 voters, and which Benfica has already beaten and by far, with almost four hours left to close the electoral act.
If none of the candidates receives more than 50% of the votes, a second round will be held between the two most voted candidates on November 8th.
160,182 members are eligible to participate.
