The reviews are in for Keanu Reeves,’ 61, latest movie, Good Fortune. Directed by Aziz Ansari, 42, the comedy follows a “well-meaning but inept angel” and examines what the American Dream means today.
The film premiered at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival. Most critics are applauding Reeves’ performance, saying it’s the saving grace” of the film. With a 75% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, to say the reviews are mixed is an understatement.
‘Good Fortune’ Reviews So Far
Most reviews give a lot of praise for Reeves’ charm. Others are more of a critique of the film’s uneven tone and structure.
The Hollywood Reporter calls the homage Good Fortune pays to “It’s a Wonderful Life by way of Trading Places” is “heartfelt” and genuinely funny in spots, but the end result feels like a “hodgepodge” that doesn’t quite marry satire with sincerity. Still, Reeves shines as Gabriel, with Deadline Hollywood calling the film’s intentions “more timely than ever.”
Roger Ebert’s Brian Tallerico describes it as “essentially a vehicle” for Reeves, indulging in his gentle humor and sweetness (even if the overarching concept feels muddled).
Vulture praises the film’s attempt to illuminate gig economy struggles through a whimsical lens, crediting Reeves with grounding the emotional core. The Guardian flags that while the ambition is there, the comedy suffers from a scattered script and a lack of sharp humor.
