Penta has revealed the one thing he’ll never do in WWE.
The fan favourite luchador made his debut with the sports entertainment giant in January and quickly caught fire with fans gripped by his exciting in-ring style and unique look.
His gear and mask are a vital part of his image, but as a Mexican wrestler, the latter holds an even greater significance, with his real identity kept a closely guarded secret.
Speaking exclusively to Metro at WWE’s show in Manchester days before Sunday’s Clash In Paris PLE on Netflix, Penta explained why he doesn’t ever see himself unmasking in front of the fans.
‘No,’ he smiled. ‘I am Mexican. This is my culture. In Mexico, the mask and the Lucha Libre, it’s like religion, basically.’
He pointed out while he is willing to be a team player and do his job in WWE, he knows people like creative boss Triple H wouldn’t put him in such a difficult position.

‘I’m here. I respect every rules here, but WWE respect every rule about Penta,’ he said. ‘For example, about the mask. The mask is the more important thing in my career and then my gear, for everything.’
He added: ‘I think Penta never lose the mask.’
Some stars like Rey Mysterio, Santos Escobar and others have been unmasked over the years, and fans are able to recognise them in public.
Although Penta’s face – and even his real name – are kept secret to protect his identity, some fans have come up to him in public despite him not wearing his mask at the time.

‘They recognised me maybe for the tattoos, and the neck, and the arms,’ he shrugged, while admitting he still tries to throw them off the scent.
He laughed: ‘Always when I see a regular person, sometimes, “Hey, you’re Penta?” “No, why?” “Oh, the tattoos?” For some different things, people recognise me in the industry.’
Penta has formed a unique bond with the fans almost instantly, and he’s glad WWE management has trusted him to be himself as a performer.

‘I love WWE, because now WWE likes the Penta style, [WWE] never says, “can’t do that,”‘ he explained. Nothing, always “just be real”. This is the best formula for me, be real.’
From his entrance and his mask to his charismatic strut, he’s glad to have resonated so strongly with the fans.
‘When I saw my music immediately, in my body, I feel energy. I wanna come to the ring right now to destroy anyone is face me,’ he said of the connection he shares with the audience.
‘So I think this is the real hormone for the crowd, “Hey, this guy is different. This guy tries something.” ‘

And while there will naturally be comparisons with WWE’s greatest luchadors, Penta – who has fans chanting his Cero Meido catchphrase all over the world – makes it clear he wants to be a legend in his own right.
”I don’t wanna be the next Rey Mysterio, I wanna be the first Penta. I don’t wanna be the next Eddie Guerrero,’ he said. ‘Obviously, Eddie and Ray and other wrestlers inspire me in something. But Penta [makes his] own style, you know?
‘This is my theme, the most important thing. Obviously, I love Eddie because he was a legend. He inspired me in something, the character, the different things.

‘You know, Reycito, I love Rey. I love always Rey Mysterio, no matter what, he always is my role model. But in the present brother, can I say, Penta [is a] star, a new different style in WWE, never seen before.’
With the crowd behind him, and a European tour seeing him team up with the likes of Sami Zayn and CM Punk, Penta is now setting his sights on his first taste of gold since arriving in January.
‘For now, my next goal is to win the Intercontinental Championship,’ he said of the title currently held by Rey’s son Dominik Mysterio.
He smiled: ‘At the same time, I wanna conquer everything here, no matter what, no matter the champion. Penta has come to WWE to conquer everything, bro.’
WWE Clash In Paris will stream live on Netflix at 7pm on Sunday, August 31.
