Your Favorite Childhood Breakfast Just Bulked Up on Protein

Remember running late to school and dropping in a couple of frozen waffles in the toaster before you headed out the door? Now, your favorite waffle brand, Eggo, is all grown up and packed with protein with its expanded line of protein-fortified waffles.

For $5.99 (10-pack waffles, 12-pack pancakes), it’s easier than ever to get your macros in and take a walk down memory lane. After last year’s release of the Chocolate Chip and Strawberry Delight Protein Waffles, Eggo recently expanded the line with Buttermilk Vanilla Protein Waffles, Vanilla Protein Pancakes, and Blueberry Protein Pancakes.

How Much Protein Do They Have?

Hitting your daily macros doesn’t have to be a slog. With Eggo’s expanded line of protein-packed breakfast items, you don’t have to rely on protein bars and shakes day in and day out. Fortified protein is one of the biggest trends now, so there are plenty of options to choose.

“When getting your protein feels impossible, Eggo makes it irresistible,” says Alicia Mosley, Vice President of Marketing, Frozen Foods at Kellanova. With these new Eggo flavors, you get 20-percent of your recommended daily protein in a single serving. That’s not too bad if you’re looking for a post-workout boost or a morning pick-me-up.

Eggo’s Buttermilk Vanilla Protein Waffles contain 10 grams of protein per two waffles (180 calories), while the Vanilla and Blueberry Protein Pancakes have 13 grams of protein per three pancakes (250 calories). Is it comparable to levels found in protein powders and shakes? Not really, but these waffles and pancakes are a welcome addition when you’re trying to mix things up.

If you’re looking to add more protein to your meal, top them off with a generous spread of Greek yogurt, peanut butter, or even cottage cheese. Looking to pair your sweet with something savory instead? Add a side of lean chicken or turkey sausage links for a hearty breakfast.

How Do They Taste?

Sure, they have that extra boost of protein, but the real test comes down to flavor. Can it hold up as a solid breakfast item when you’re on the go? Are they better than some of the chalky-tasting protein shakes? Social media seems to think so.

Many happily report that these taste exactly like normal Eggo waffles, with a boost of flavor, depending on the variety you get. And now, you have plenty to choose from, whether you want a hint of strawberry, chocolate, vanilla, or blueberry.

However, some have noticed that they do give off somewhat of a protein powder smell. And some have even said the waffles don’t taste like the flavor that is advertised. Still, it can be a great base for your sweetener of choice to improve its taste.
