Last week, YouTube found itself in the tech community’s sights when numerous popular tech tutorials were suddenly marked as dangerous or harmful and removed. The affected creators suspected that an AI could be behind these decisions, but YouTube vehemently denies this. The platform explained that both the initial decisions and appeal rejections were not due to automation.
Rich White, a computer engineer and operator of the channel CyberCPU Tech, was one of the affected creators. Two of his videos that showed workarounds for installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware have been removed. These videos are popular with users who want to bypass Microsoft account requirements. White and other creators are concerned that such deletions could jeopardize their channels, especially if older content is affected.
Uncertainty about the exact reasons for the deletions has led many creators to censor their content or not publish scheduled videos. White explained that he had already withheld content for fear of losing his channel, which is now his primary source of income. Britec, another affected creator, also reported loss of income and paused sponsorship agreements.
While YouTube continues to insist that no AI was involved in the decisions, confusion remains high. Some creators suspect that the platform may use AI to detect violations but does not distribute strikes to avoid over-moderation. Without clear information from YouTube, creators are left with no choice but to speculate and exercise caution to protect their channels.
