Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he is ready to participate in the meeting in Budapest between his American and Russian counterparts, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, if he receives an invitation.
At a press conference on Sunday night, Zelensky said he would be present if invited to “a three-way meeting” or a format in which the President of the United States meets with his Ukrainian and Russian counterparts separately.
Even so, Zelensky stated that the Hungarian capital “is not the best place” for contacts about Ukraine.
He recalled that Ukraine defended that negotiations to end the war could take place in Switzerland, Austria, the Vatican, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Türkiye.
Zelensky added that he doubts that Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán “can do anything positive for Ukrainians.”
The Ukrainian head of state recalled that Hungary vetoed progress in Ukraine’s accession negotiations to the European Union and that it opposed sanctions against Russia.
In the same meeting with journalists in Kiev, the Ukrainian President said that Ukraine “needs” 25 American-made Patriot anti-aircraft systems to help contain Russian attacks.
The reference to anti-aircraft systems occurred days after Zelensky’s visit to Washington.
On the other hand, the Ukrainian President stated that Russia continues to demand, in negotiations with the United States on the end of the war, that Ukraine withdraw its military from the eastern regions of Donetsk and Lugansk, which are already “almost completely occupied” by Russian forces.
