Appearing on Late Night with Seth Meyers on Tuesday, Aug. 12, Zoë Kravitz revealed Taylor Swift had offered her and her mom, Lisa Bonet, a place to stay during the L.A. fires forced them to evacuate earlier this year.
Due to Bonet’s pet snake, their stay led to an interesting encounter and a ripped-apart bathroom.
“My mom has a pet snake, and so she came over with the snake,” explained Kravitz about the circumstances of having to evacuate. “We ended up having to stay there for maybe about two weeks.”
The Caught Stealing star explained how Swift has a “beautiful house from the ‘30s” that she wanted to preserve and keep pristine. “It was the last day, I was gonna leave [for work], my mom was actually going to stay longer … and I was saying to my mom, ‘I really want to be a good house guest … I don’t want her to even know we were here.'”
As Kravitz was getting her things together to leave, her mom called her with a problem. Kravitz found her “crouched in the corner in this weird way” in the upstairs bathroom.
Bonet explained that she was washing her face when Orpheus (the snake’s name) escaped into a little hole in the corner of Swif’t’s bathroom before Bonet could grab its tail.
“The hole is next to a banquette that is built into the wall that has two drawers at the bottom,” describes Kravitz. “…So I get down the ground, I take the drawers out [and] as this is happening, the snake is getting further and further [away] … I was panicking so much.”
With no luck in grabbing the snake, the mother-daughter duo had no choice but to call the house manager, who came with a crowbar to “tear apart” the bathroom as a last resort.
“We’re ripping up the tile, we’re scratching the walls … [We] completely destroyed Taylor’s bathroom,” said Kravitz.
The actor offered to pay for all the repairs until it was fixed without letting Swift know about what happened. But being a good friend, she called the singer to let her know what happened.
“I remember calling her and saying, ‘Hey … I wanted to talk to you about something,'” recalled Kravitz. “And she was like, ‘Is it the fact that you almost lost a snake in the house and destroyed my bathroom?'”
Kravitz and Swift became close during the COVID-19 pandemic, with the actor attending her Eras Tour in August 2024.
